Nutrient Stress Dynamics

The yield of cotton does not always correlate well with biomass accumulation, as is the case in other crops. In fact, too much plant nutrition can result in rank growth, excessive vegetative growth, which causes cotton plants to be susceptible to boll rot, difficult to defoliate, and more attractive and vulnerable to late-season insects.

The project is evaluating cotton response to nutrient stress dynamics across different environmental conditions. Nutrient uptake in cotton will be mapped, which will help inform best fertilizer application practices for optimal yield and economic profitability.

We appreciate the Georgia Cotton Commission for funding and BASF and Bayer AG for providing some resources for the project.
